Frequently-asked questions about P-A-L
1. WHAT IS THIS BLOG ABOUT? It's about P-A-L, or Picture-Aided Learning. It helps you learn vocabularies and idioms faster, and with less pain.
2. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO? The contents of the blog are arranged sequentially. Follow these steps: (a) click the photo links http://pal-expert.blogspot.com/ and enjoy; (b) read the list of the idioms and vocabularies to be learned (let's call them "Target Words"); and (c) read the story – the Target Words are placed very close to their meanings – and relate them to the pictures using your imagination.
3. HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE SUCCEEDED IN THE LEARNING? Do these: (d) read the story again with the Target Words removed, and try to put them back in either mentally or in writing, (e) read the list of Target Words again, enjoying how much you know already, and (f) go back to (a) and start again, till you've learned everything.
4. HOW IS P-A-L DIFFRERNT FROM OTHER TYPES OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION? In two ways: it uses pictures, and it puts the Target Words in context. With these, the "conventional wisdom" that one can only learn and retain 5 or 10 words a day falls away. Learners can now think big, and aim for the sky.
5. WHY ARE PICTURES AND CONTEXTS BIG DEALS? We think in pictures though we express in words. We learn new words and expressions and use them in the context of future conversations and to write them as part of an overall piece. We don't use them in isolation. P-A-L addresses these directly.
6. WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE PICTURES? Use your own. Post the pictures you prefer onto this blog if you think they are better. We would be thrilled.

8. IS P-A-L FOR ENGLISH OR NON-ENGLISH SPEAKERS? Both. Just because a particular article or blog posting is written in English does not mean that it is intended only for native English speakers. It is to be read by an English learner who may be from Beijing or Brussels, Bangalore or Bali, Tokyo or Taipei, Seattle or Seoul, London or Launceston, Hamburg or Hong Kong, etc.
9. WHO ARE YOU? World citizens of Chinese descent, living in Hong Kong.
10. WHY DO YOU DO THIS BLOG? To efficiently publicize this learning technique. There are many reasons why the Internet is better than books. It takes too long to write and publish books. Books lack interactivity. The news wouldn't spread as fast. Our priority is not royalties from copies of books printed, but letting readers like you know what P-A-L can do.
11. CAN P-A-L BE APPLIED TO LEARNING OTHER LANGUAGES? Of course, but we need to be realistic and wait till the timing is right.
